Jungle : Prachin, Khao Yai - Thailand
Class : Insect Wood, Wild
Species : Crassna
Exceptional batch of Agarwood from Prachinburi Provence (home of Khao Yai Mountain)
Expertly cleaned, resin dense, thick and quite heavy
SCENT :
This is a second distinctive batch from the same region as another batch of Thai Agarwood in the shop (from Khao Yai Mountain) - this batch is from the foothills of Prachin. In comparison - the other batch of Khao Yai Mountain Knots is more floral - this batch of Prachinis more spicy.
This batch is primarily made up of insect woods - and insect infections tend to be more sweet. This batch is also more spicy than it is floral.
*Spicy Chai on the front
*Sweet Tamarind Chutney in the Heart
*Sweetly Resinous Vanilla and Condensed Milk in the Base
** Quantity is limited
It's hard to find wood of this quality from Thailand, as the vast majority of what can be found these days is plantation stock from further south, in Trat.
Although Thai woods have existed in the Gulf market - Japan and Taiwan have historically been big consumers. The reason for this, in my opinion, Thai Crassnas smell more similar to Vietnamese Crassnas than do Cambodis. Cambodis tend to have a darker profile, and often a Sour/Dark Fruit flavor profile - whereas Thais are often Sweet or Floral, which are much more preferred by the Japanese.
The Sweetness in Thai woods remind me a bit of the Black Sugar that is so beloved in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and China. The best, in my opinion, hailing from the southernmost Japanese island of Okinawa. If you've never had Black Sugar Boba, or a Tiger Milk Tea ... you're missing out!
I mention this particular milk tea, because it's this flavor profile that this batch reminds me the most of. A lightly sweetened condensed milk, with an almost vanillic floral quality. Hints of exotic spices. Occasional touches of sweet tamarind chutney. If you've ever been to Asia - this classical milk tea flavor can be found everywhere - and it's generally the Taiwanese and Japanese that make the best milk teas.
Regarding woods like this ... on my last trip to Japan, I found only 2 stinkin' pieces of Thai wood, one piece about the size of a finger, and the other about the size of a hand. The shop was asking astronomical prices for what we here would likely call mid-grade wood. The scent was stellar - but not the most resin dense (one of the big differences in how Japan market evaluates value (scent quality first) vs the Arab market (resin density first)). This batch I have here blows those two pieces outta the water.
My observation here …
The Asian Market tends to prefer Crassnas and Sinesis woods - Top Note, Bright, Lightly Rich and Sweet stuff.
The Arab Market likes darker, Base Note-heavy species like Malaccensis, Agallocha, and Gyrinops.
This here is a mountain batch of Prachin from the foothills of Khao Yai Mountain. Great, thick, resin dense stuff. Smells like dessert 🍨 Sweet Tamarind, Vanilla Cream, Boba Milk Tea - and a little more heavily Spiced. You're gonna love this batch.
What we have here is prime Japan-Market flavor
Priced just right - this is a great batch for special occasions as well as more frequent daily burns, especially if you can pick up a little quantity.
I highly recommend grabbing enough to make use of this great batch now, while stashing some for future enjoyment. Believe me - you'll thank me later.
