Class : Wild
Jungles : Manipur and Meghalaya Co-distillation
Distillation : June - August 2020 - Stainless - 7 day Non-Barnyard Soak - STEAM Distillation
This oil took 3 runs, each for 3+ weeks of steam distillation for a total of 10 weeks.
We used ultra premium shavings that were as black as the woods they were cleaned from to produce it, and it took ages to put enough material together to juice this in our smallest still. High resin content coupled with steam distillation means small yields at the expense of a bed wetting dreamy aroma.
SCENT
Manipur oils and woods have long been sought out as some of the best from the region. Oils, when produced from this region with especially with no fermentation, can tease out citrus and fruit notes (sometimes leaning more on sweet fruits, at others more towards fruit leather), and occasional pepperiness - a unique characteristic from this region.
Meghalaya - Sanskrit for 'abode of clouds'. The combination of high altitude and being the wettest place on earth makes Meghalaya about the most ideal place for agarwood trees to grow. Although you might expect airy notes from such high altitude woods - Meghalaya often produces sweet hay and suede, notes of fruity plums and dried raisins - reminiscent of Burmese and occasional Laotian oils of yesteryear.
What happens when you juice them together?
This oil is DEEP. Slight hints of nuttiness. Tobacco. TOBACCO. Fields of hay. Dried Hunza raisins and what smells like a dash of liquor. Wafts of Asian citrus. And my fave ... notes of RICH, DEEP tea liquor.
Gently heated chips with wisps of Scotch and lightly peated Heather and caramelized sugar will leave you wondering if you’re supposed to be chewing your arm off, or simply smell it.
It's a rich and incredibly complex oil - one that may require a few moments of contemplation to fully wrap your nose around what you're smelling.
Enjoy the mind games ...
