An Imperial Incense-inspired Floral Perfume.

The Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所, Kyōto Gosho) used to be the residence of Japan's Imperial Family until 1868, when the emperor and capital were moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. It is located in the spacious Kyoto Imperial Park (京都御苑, Kyōto Gyoen), an attractive park in the center of the city that also encompasses the Sento Imperial Palace, and today, a few other attractions.

The traditions that arose in ancient China (and later spread to Japan) were in the first instance influenced by the living plants and their aromas as they appeared through the seasons. The role of the natural world in the life of the Chinese and Japanese peoples was deep and significant. The plants which they chose to reflect the moods of the seasons - as well as their symbolic aesthetic, spiritual and mystical messages - were relatively few in number but carried an immense impact.

One of the great virtues of natural essences - is that many of the plants that flourished hundreds, and even thousands of years ago in a particular culture - are even now being grown, and in some cases their essences extracted. Their exquisite aromas act as a silent but effective means of transporting through time and space into cultures that are distant and different from our own. It is a simple and sweet way of linking ourselves with peoples and cultures whom have lived long before us.

I drew my inspiration for this perfume from my daydreaming of what it must have been like - to have been an Emperor back in the heyday of Incense-laden Kyoto and have my own fragrant garden in which to Listen to it.

So I did some research on the flowers and fragrant plants often found in imperial gardens...and combined those aromatic treasures (Osmanthus, Jasmine, Magnolia, Lily, Lotus - Hinoki and Pine) with a few materials found in top shelf Japanese incense (Agarwood (Cambodi), Sandalwood, Patchouli, Anise and Cinnamon). What came together...is a centuries old perfume memory of the Emperor, sitting alone in contemplation in his garden, Listening to incense – the scent of fumigation and garden intermingling.

If you are a Japanese Incense lover...this perfume will make your heart melt.

If you've ever spent time in Japan or China...this is the Fragrance of Zen.
