Distilled : 2024 - Copper Alembic
Region : Kannauj, India
Species : Rosa centifolia (Rose de Mai / Provencial Rose)
Queen Noor Jehan (sometimes spelled Jahan), of the 16th century reign of the Mughal Empire in India, is widely credited with the discovery of rose oil. She is said to have collected droplets of rose oil from a canal flowing with rose petals.
Rosa × centifolia (lit. hundred leaved rose; syn. R. gallica var. centifolia (L.) Regel), the Provence Rose, Cabbage Rose or Rose de Mai - is a hybrid rose developed by Dutch breeders in the period between the 17th century and the 19th century, possibly earlier.
Today, approximately 2,500–3,000 hectares (ha) of Indian land are dedicated to rose cultivation, including Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, Pushkar in Rajasthan, Hasayan, Ettah, Kanuj, Ghazipur, Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and some areas in Punjab.
Here in the West, Centifolia Rose Oil is not a frequently seen material, as most is self-consumed within India, and the rest by the European Market.
Only about 200 kg of rose oil and rose attars in total are produced every year in all of India, in addition to a large quantity of rose water. The highest acreage of Damask rose lies in the Western Himalayan region of the northern plains where the land is ideal for its cultivation.
Only 10-20kg of Centifolia Rose Otto are produced every season, weather permitting, and it is not often available. I got lucky this season and was able to stock some.
The unique soil and climatic conditions of the area are suitable for the production of exceptional rose oil of international standards, surpassing that of Bulgarian oil.
This is some really nice material, and a rare opportunity to enjoy a rarely seen Rose oil in these parts. Grab some while it's available.
THE SCENT
An exquisitely beautiful and refined oil that is sweet, rich, and clear. Delightfully floral undertones with a delicate bouquet of fresh Cabbage Roses.
You’ll find yourself melting at the warmth and comfort this Rose Otto exudes.
On thing that I always love about Rose Ottos is how they have a "delicate petal'y'ness". Rose Absolutes tend to be more jammy and warming. Ottos tend to be more cooling, and come with a sense of fresh petals caressing the skin of my face. They also work magic in Sandalwood or Oud, and play beautifully with other Florals and Citrus.
It's a beautiful oil, and if you're looking for rare oils - not much quantity is produced from this region every year.
