This unique batch of Yellow Caturra is from Flores Island - part of the East Nusa chain of southern islands in Indonesia. East Nusa Tenggara - often referred to as ENT - is historically famous for its dense Sandalwood forests, which prompted trade with, and a slow, eventual political colonization by the Dutch East India Company in the 1600's. The islands were ideal also for the cultivation of Tea and Coffee, which started in the late 1600's and early 1700's. Indonesia has grown to be the 4th largest coffee producer world wide ... but premium single origin batches from the region are a rarity.

Though Indonesian coffees are a staple offering and flavor profile in the coffee industry - when is the last time you had a small-batch, hand-harvested batch that truly benefitted the community it comes from?

This particular coffee is sun-dried on raised beds after being cleaned and sorted by flotation. After being dried, the cherries are rehydrated, de-pulped and then the beans are sun-dried again raised beds. Once the coffee is well dried, it is hulled and sorted by density before being packed and exported!

More on the Flavor Profile below - but first, a little bit about this project :

THE STORY

The past few years with Covid have dramatically impacted farming communities in rural developing nations. The guys I work with for sourcing me some of the diverse Agarwoods from Indonesia have been hurting, as their ability to move around has been severely restricted, and global economies impacted. This has left these guys impoverished beyond belief. The work they do for me and their other clients hasn't been enough to make ends meet ... so we've been working on a way to support them and their communities.

Around these guys I work with are various small family coffee plantations - also dramatically impacted as contracts with companies like Starbucks expired during Covid and were not renewed. I'm sure you can imagine how badly this would impact your business to have your largest client pull out during a global economic shut down.

We've been experimenting with a number of different materials and products - and this is the first I'll be releasing, ***the proceeds of which benefit directly the people collecting and roasting these select small-batch coffees for me***.

Your support of these efforts makes a world of difference in the lives of real people in Jember, Indonesia.

THE TASTE

Yellow Caturra trees are a type of dwarf tree, making it easier to collect the cherries. Their smaller size allows for more compact planting, and they have an impressively good root system, which allows the trees to absorb an even higher nutrient density from the soil, which also can be tasted in the mouthfeel of the coffee.

The shape and color of this coffee bean are different from other Arabica coffees.

Like the dwarf trees - you'll notice that Yellow Caturra is smaller in size - and harder in texture.

Standard coffee cherries are RED when ripe. Caturra coffee, on the other hand, is YELLOW (hence the name).

If you've heard of Yellow Caturra coffees - you've most likely heard of Hawaiin or Columbian varietals. What nobody tells you is ... the largest purchases of Indonesian Yellow Caturra are Hawaii and Columbia. That's right - the vast majority of Hawaain and Columbian Caturras are cut with the Indonesian Varietal. Now is your chance to have a pure, uncut, single origin Yellow Caturra - and this from a single village in Flores.

Yellow Caturra is said to have the most unique taste compared to other coffees from Indonesia. Indonesian coffees tend to be grown in mountainous forest area. This causes the taste to be more earthy and dense/heavy. Yellow Caturra tends to not be shade grown - yielding a less earthy, and more of a tropical flavor.

Yellow Caturra has a unique aroma and taste that is soft - with a distinctive fruitiness reminiscent of lemons, blueberries, green apples, and tropical white florals like honeysuckle. Our Flores Island Yellow Caturra is a true cup of tropical, bright and fruity coffee ! Caturras for this reason are often referred to as Flower Bomb Coffee.

If you are in to unique, single origin coffees - you don't want to miss this Yellow Caturra from Flores Island.

Remember, all proceeds from the sales of these artisan coffees benefit these guys directly. This is as Fair Trade as it gets !!
