If you're not familiar with Khao Yai, Thailand - the region lies north east of Bangkok in Central Thailand, and is home to the first National Park of Thailand - which is now the 3rd largest National Park in Thailand. It's a beautifully wooded area, dotted with farms and nature.

I work with two brothers, both of whom have Biodynamic farms in Khao Yai and Prachinburi. We three have been distilling together from the very beginning of Rising Phoenix - and several of the Wild Thai and Plantation Thai oils that I've had in the shop over the years has been produced by one of the two brothers for me. Often from superb incense woods from older 30-40+ year old trees from their farms, but on rare occasion, from wild woods, usually from old stocks we find from a farmer friend, or from the occasional wild tree that comes down in the area.

Like many parts of Thailand - swaths of farms of Agarwood grows in the region, as the area grows and produces some incredible woods, and some beautiful oils are produced from the area. Khao Yai, Prachinburi, Trat, Rayong, Chanthaburi - these names conjure some of the most commonly found regions for plantation woods and oils. These regions used to be home to some of the most prized woods in the Far East. In fact, some of the most prized pieces of wood I find when I'm in Japan - the kinda stuff they don't readily show you - are not from Vietnam or Cambodia ... but from the old jungles of Thailand.

Finding wild Agarwood from the area these days ... is quite a challenge.
Enter Wild Thai Khao Yai 2021.

The oil really allows the sweetness of the Incense and Oud nuances from the region to shine through in an easily accessible way. No Thai fruit or florals - rather, it’s all incense and resinous depth. This is an oil you can wear to work !


THE SCENT


On the front end, you'll find a greenish, almost jungle'y note with a fragrant, uplifting aromatic incense vibe. It'll give you the feeling of untouched, virgin forest, quite in its solitude.

As the oil progresses, there's an almost golden, brushed suede and leather note that begins to shine through - that also manages to ride all the way through dry down.

As Dry Down approaches and that soft, supple suede that you've been cuddling up to caresses your skin ever so gently - the resinous, Oudiness of the oil picks up with an almost muskiness to it that'll tickle your fancy. I've smelled this oil now on dozens of people's skin, and I'm always amazed at the different nuances that reveal themselves on different people. It's an enigmatic oil.

Wild Thai Khao Yai 2021 is a potent oil. A little goes a long way, making this a very good value for the money, and an increasingly rare opportunity to put your nose on wild Thai Oud oil.
