Sorong is the largest city of the Indonesian province of West Papua. The city is located on the western tip of the island of New Guinea with its only land borders being with Sorong Regency. It is the gateway to Indonesia’s Raja Ampat Islands, species rich coral reef islands in an area considered the heart of the world’s coral reef biodiversity. It also is the logistics hub for Indonesia’s thriving eastern oil and gas frontier.

The origin of Sorong’s name comes from the word Soren, which means “deep and wavy ocean” in the Biak language. The name was first used by the Biak-Numfor people who sailed to different islands before they finally decided to settle down in Raja Ampat Islands. When the Biak-Numfor people came to the place called “Daratan Maladum”, they decided to call it Soren. After centuries of contact with Chinese merchants, European missionaries, and people from Maluku and Sangihe-Talaud, the name underwent further change into Sorong.

A land of extensive rainforest - the region is famous for its red clay, giving Sorong its colloquial name of “The Red Lands.”

ABOUT

For those not familiar with the unique world of Ouds and Agarwoods - Papua and Papua New Guinea - two halves of the same island - yield some of the most unique Agarwoods which have produced some of the most beloved oils from Gyrinops and Filaria species.

Most commonly - we see long dead Gyrinops trees recovered from mangroves and rivers down around Meroke. Even more prized are the live tree specimens - with the most distinctive oils being produced from Filaria.

As many are more familiar with Meroke in the South, or Jayapura almost directly North - few have experienced woods and oils from the Western Frontier of the island. In this case - Sorong, known as The Red Lands, for its famously cloths staining red clay.

With coral reefs and exciting coastal adventures that have made the small city a popular destination - the jungles surrounding the area are rich with natural resources and coveted Agarwood.

SCENT

I’ve been mentioning in some of our new Indonesian oil listings about our newest team member. For the better part of 2 years we’ve been running test batches in his equipment, and now that he’s an official member of Rising Phoenix, I’ve outfitted him with new equipment to produce expressly for me.

This is one of our test batches, produced in copper - New Gen style.

I don’t want to overhype this oil … but I DO want to impress just how unique it is.

For starters, you’ve heard me mention how some coastal oils will carry the scent of sea air and ocean breezes. As if the trees have inhaled deeply of the ocean air and stored those deep breaths and memories in their trunks.

**This oil is rich with oceanic overtones 🥰

The oil starts out kinda dark and stormy. Incense-laden wafts of gentle smoke - like the first moments of a chip on one of our Subitisms.

Woods from The Red Lands of Sorong are massively popular in the Chinese Market for their creamy sweetness. So popular - it’s quite hard to get your hands on any as they’ve been picking the area clean.

This creamy sweetness comes in to play here in a very unique way …

Whereas the front end of the oil is like a storm rolling in off the water - the backend of the oil is of the sun breaking through the clouds. It’s as of a piercing, bright white light shines off your wrist.

It’s a very unique experience - transitioning from dark and brooding, Smoke and incense - to a very clean, sweet, creamy whiteness.

Sorong : Red Lands is a very unique experience. Filaria showcasing its creamy sweetness in a wonderous cacophony of dark clouds and blazing white light.
