Here at Rising Phoenix, I endeavor to either produce or collect what cannot be easily found elsewhere. In so doing, I've curated what has become the largest selection of Artisan-distilled Oils, Incenses, and Aromatherapy and Perfumer's materials anywhere on the internet. I'd say I'm succeeding and exceeding in what I set out to do.

What you'll find here is a collection like no other. Products that I produce in-house. Products I commission. Products I find in my hunt across the globe to find the most unique and exquisite raw materials from the 4 Corners. I've tried to bring the best of the world right to your fingertips, including some of the most unique and most rare specimens - which brings us to this very unique pure Oud oil from 2007 - Sonai Rupai.

Sonai Rupai is a wildlife preserve bordering on Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh, with Assam on the southern border. I've been doing more and more work directly with various forestry departments - which is what brought this unique specimen in to my sights.

Back in 2007, a tree well over a century old came down in the wilderness preserve of Sonai Rupai. It was collected by the forestry department and then handed over to a local distiller, juiced and then the oil was shelved for aging. Through a few chats, I was connected by the forestry department to the distiller, and from the distiller - straight to me - and now on to you!

A QUICK STORY

I'm not one to brag - but I'm told I need to work on tooting my own horn a little bit more. With that...a quick story :

In February of 2023 I hosted another Artisan OudFest here in metro Atlanta. There was an Indian gentleman who has been in attendance at several of my events now that flew in the other side of the country, all the way from California. Great guy who's been all over the world. Aside from his stellar personality - one of the things I appreciate about him his extensive travels in the pursuit of Agarwood, and has had the opportunity to browse - in person - quite a few woods and oils directly in the countries of origin, as well as across the Gulf. I mention this because - he mentioned at the event that the specimens that I brought out here in Atlanta were the most diverse and best he had seen in any single place he's been, and on top of that - I had what is likely the greatest collection of Indian and Subcontinental oils anywhere on the planet...and I didn't even bring but a fraction of the collection out over that joyous weekend!

THE SCENT

As I briefly mentioned - this oil hails from a unique geographical area. Sonai Rupai comes from Northern Assam, where it bumps up against Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan. This makes this oil really unique in that I find elements of all three regions present in the oil, and they meld together in a way that makes for one very unique oil.

Despite this being a traditional distillation, conducted over a wood fire in a traditional deg setup - don't expect Sonai Rupai to be a stereotypical hay and barn profile. Rather, Sonai Rupai is what I class as a "Whiskey Distillation" - akin to several of the VERY popular oils currently in the shop like :

Jiribam Guf 2006
Krishnai Char 2016
Dawki 2016
Sujanagar 2016

If you've tried one of these oils and liked it - you'll love Sonai Rupai

For starters - it's a DEEP oil. It's not bright. It's not airy or ethereal. Like the above mentioned oils ... it's on a spectrum of BLACK. Even the color of the oil is nearly pitch black.

Like the Whiskey Profile suggests - expect Peated Malt, dark woods and hints of what could be Bitter Cacao - layered over rich Resin, Hay and Leather.

Don't expect florals or fruits or amber sweetness. If those are your jam - you're not going to find it here.

But if you like the Shadow's shadow - pick yourself up a bottle of Sonai Rupai!

Beautifully aging for over a decade and a half.
