The Queen of Sheba (Hebrew: מלכת שבא‎; Arabic: ٱلْمَلِكَة بَلْقِيْس‎, romanized: Al-Malikah Balqīs) is a figure first mentioned in the Hebrew Bible.

In the original story, she brings a caravan of valuable gifts for the Israelite King Solomon. This tale has undergone extensive Jewish, Islamic, and Ethiopian elaborations, and has become the subject of one of the most widespread and fertile cycles of legends in the Orient.

Modern historians identify Sheba with the South Arabian kingdom of Saba in present-day Yemen.

Virtually all modern scholars agree that Sheba was the South Arabian kingdom of Saba, centered around the oasis of Marib, in present-day Yemen. Sheba was quite well known in the classical world, and its country was called Arabia Felix by the Romans. Around the middle of the first millennium B.C., there were Sabaeans also in the Horn of Africa, in the area that later became the realm of Aksum.

There are five places in the Bible where the writer distinguishes Sheba (שׁבא‎), i.e. the Yemenite Sabaeans, from Seba (סבא‎), i.e. the African Sabaeans. In Ps. 72:10 they are mentioned together: "the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts". This spelling differentiation, however, may be purely factitious; the indigenous inscriptions make no such difference, and both Yemenite and African Sabaeans are there spelt in exactly the same way.

Bible stories of the Queen of Sheba and the ships of Ophir served as a basis for legends about the Israelites traveling in the Queen of Sheba's entourage when she returned to her country to bring up her child by Solomon.

Christian scriptures mention a "queen of the South" (Greek: βασίλισσα νότου, Latin: Regina austri), who "came from the uttermost parts of the earth", i.e. from the extremities of the then known world, to hear the wisdom of Solomon (Mt. 12:42; Lk. 11:31)

I have long wanted to make an Attar inspired by the Queen of Sheba. Opulent, Regal, and fitting for a Queen of her renown.

The Scent

I wanted to make a complex Rose-centered Attar, the irony being that it is not certain if Roses existed this far south at the time of the Biblical Queen of Sheba.

It has never been completely clear how the 30-petal Damask rose appeared in Taif. Due to its close resemblance to Kazanlik rose, it has been suggested that the Taif Rose was brought to Taif from Balkans by Turks, who occupied this area in the 14th century. However, the rose Kazanlik, whose Turkish name means "suitable for the [distiller's] kettle," has its origins in the Persian Rose plantations around Shiraz and Kashan. The legends say that this rose actually originates from India.

For arguments sake - we are acting here as if she would have had access to the opulent Rose. I’ve chose to use T’aif, Medina, and Moldovan Rose to creat a unique and incredibly sensual floral note. Rare and exquisite for the Queen!

I then paired these three rare roses with three rare, custom distilled Rising Phoenix Sandalwoods to creat a rich, sweet, intensely complex Sandalwood note - topped off with a touch of Ambergris found in Japan and “African Musk” (Ethiopian Civet) - supposedly one of the Gifts given to King Solomon by the Queen of Sheba.

Now - I know the name and the notes sound a bit feminine, but Sheba is easily a unisex fragrance that wears boldly and beautifully on either Men or Women. Get your regal on with Sheba!
