When it comes to Burmese oils, there are 2 general things folks are used to ... and Prome is neither of them.
1. Most Burmese oils we see hail from Myitkyina, in North Eastern Myanmar.
Ngapali is over 1100km way - an entirely different region and scent - and a rarely seen one any longer.
2. The vast majority of Burmese oils we see these days are farmed, overly fermented, and generally are of low (albeit "market standard") quality. Prome is neither of these.
2021 Prome, on the other hand, was distilled from a single tree that was over 100 years old. It was distilled from resinous black broken chips and shavings from all the top incense grade material from this single tree. A rarity to purchase Burmese oils like this any longer.
THE SCENT
I've had the opportunity to produce a few oils very traditionally, by Indian deg style.
These old set ups are wood fired and controlled entirely "by feel". If we were in the kitchen, my wife would call this "grandma style" - no measurements or modern tech. Everything done by hand and relying on the senses. Deg distillations are often carefully control-heated by sensing the temperature inside the boiler by feeling radiant heat - and the boiler, itself, is heated by wood fire rather than by gas (or electric).
These kinds of distillations take a lot of skill to produce, and there is a certain character from them that can't be duplicated with more modern set ups.
On thing I really like about these kinds of distillations is that there is often an opening note imparted by the wood fires used to produce them. You'll find the first few seconds of the Deg Series has a common similar note, a characteristic scent imparted by this technique - before diverging into their unique personalities. Personally, I love this scent, as I like a wisp of smokiness. Smells of cooking and wood fire are primeval scents, and tap into our DNA unlike anything else.
Prome opens with a wisp of smoke and a hint of sour fruit, like an Indian chutney made from tamarind or plums, and mangos.
There's a toasted nutty quality to this oil that I've had emerge in one or two other oils from India that I've produced. In Prome, it reminds me more of a toasted Macadamia nut...quite a pleasant scent beside that sour fruit chutney note. Kinda making me hungry as I write this, haha.
As that toasty, nutty, chutney note develops, a swirl of white and indolic florals begins to ride the waves of scent into the nostrils. It's a nice contrast to the almost purpleness of the opening.
Surprisingly, Prome is quite Musky. I wouldn't call it straight up deer musky, though - its more of a vegetal muskiness reminiscent of the muskiness in my Musk Rose Attar. That quintessential Hindi Musk note, undergirding the white florals, purple fruits, and toasted nuts. On my skin, I find it gets muskier the further we go in to dry down.
Moving in to dry down, there are notes of plums and dried Hunza raisins ... notes often found in Cambodi and Burmese oils, and sometimes found in far eastern regions of India like Manipur and Nagaland. This is to say that there's an almost fruity Cambodi quality to this oil, like sticky raisin resin in the dry down that will leave you wondering if you landed in the eastern stretches of India, the northern reaches of Burma, or MUCH further South East in Cambodia. Geographically amorphous oils like this I find rather fascinating, as they take us on a journey not just to one place ... but manage to take our noses and minds on journeys of a thousand leagues.
Overall, expect tamarind, plum, and mango chutney, sticky raisins, that slight sour, fermented fruit vibe that’s typical for some ‘subcontinental’ ouds but this is still ‘clean’ oil. Milky tea like nuances ; a touch of spices. Vegetal Musk. Purple Fruits and White Florals. Sticky Oud Resin.
