Char is an interesting class of woods - one that I find most folks don’t even know what makes char, Char.

Char is harvested from long ago harvested trees - usually from the stumps left behind after a tree is cut.

How does a tree stump produce Agarwood, one might ask? Great question !

Many don’t realize that even after trees fall down - or in some cases, are cut down - although the trunk dies, the trees and roots around the tree keep the tree stumps and their roots alive. Often for years or decades after the tree comes down or is cut.

It’s during this time, long after one would think that the tree is dead - that char forms in the stump.

The cool thing is - char is often collected from trees harvested long ago. Decades ago in most cases - but sometimes from centuries past. It’s one of the reasons char is so beloved - often coming from old trees and old resin formations.

Char is one of the few woods that I would recommend trying out on charcoal - as well as one of our Subitisms. The thickness and unevenness (not a flat surface) often performed better on charcoal - partly why you’ll see char highly prized in Gulf Arab circles, and not circulating so often in Far Eastern shops.

This batch is high grade - great resin density. Expect Leather and Flowers and hints of Saffron. It’s a really enjoyable scent.

The larger batch, as seen in the last photo, has some great pieces. Large and from old trees.

I’ve listed a few pieces here for sale. If you’re needing some quantity, or something really special from the batch - feel free to ask.

PS - although I recommend trying this on charcoal - don’t let that scare you away from using on a Subitism! Just need to make sure you shave off some pieces or cut it thin, as these pieces are quite thick, and the gentle indirect heat from the Subitism likes a flat surface or pieces that aren’t too thick.
