If you're not yet familiar with my Indonesian Series of Vacuum Distilled oils ... you've been missing out!
This is a very unique single-tree distillation from Nabire, an area of Papua Island like the crook of an arm - the so-called “armpit of Papua” - connecting West Papua with the main body of the island. This is also made from a Live Tree - as opposed to the Dead / Swamp Woods of Merauke / Meroke in the far South.
Although I class this oil as a Whiskey Profile - it's more of a Cherry Pipe Tobacco and Whiskey. It's like old polished wood and varnish - and it smells absolutely intoxicating ! I've seen oils like this sell for thousands of dollars a bottle, and I think you'll understand why. It's a rare type of tonal quality to the oil, and it's a very enjoyable wear.
SCENT
The first thing I notice about this oil is the viscosity. It's thick, but not syrupy. I image with age, this oil will thicken a little further, as it's already gotten thick in just a few months since we juiced it.
From the bottle, it reminds me of a rich Cherry Pipe Tobacco. It's sweet. Almost "Red" and "Tart" smelling - which is unusual for the area, and for Filarias, in general. There's a tobacco'y sweetness to it - and it really reminds me of those rich, sticky pipe tobaccos made with fruit extracts and sugar.
There are some whiskey qualities to the oil, as well. Like a whiskey aged in fortified wine barrel, with oceanic nuances similar to some of the island whiskies of Scotland. Pipe in one hand, Scotch in the other - warming your feet over a gentle peat fire.
If you like darker, complex, deep and nuanced Oud oils ... you're in for a real treat. Sweetly tart Cherries. Jaggery. Rolled Tobacco Leaves. Old Leather chairs with their smoothly worn wooden arms - the scent of Varnish thick in the air.
Weaving in and out, I get a very gently Peated Whiskey and Subitism Incense Vapor that is there one minute, but not necessarily the next.
That Vaporous quality is worth mentioning ... Varnish and Vapor being two highly collectable, yet exceedingly elusive finds in an oil. These qualitative aspects in an oil really get my engine revving.
Undergirding all of this is a bitter-sweet Cherry Tobacco, with wafts of Lush Green Jungle and the earthy moistness of Jungle Floor. It's super complex, and dances around - not wanting to settle on any singular note or character ... partly why I class it as "Whiskey". If you drink whisky - especially Scotch - you'll know exactly what I mean.
It's an incredibly exciting oil to wear, and a rare and special treat given that it's both a Live Tree Distillation, and from a SINGLE Live Tree, at that.
