Lavender Linens Attar 2021 : Shibui Series
Lavender is one of those rare materials that spans the extra special to the mundane. Ranging from high class perfumery - forming the core of Fougeres - to cleaning products. Finding a Lavender that can stand on it's own ... now that's truly special.
I lived in France in my early 20's, first in Provence, and then in Paris.
While living in the Avignon in the South, and traveling around Provence and the Cote d'Azure, I had encountered some insanely enrapturing Lavender oils. The prices, though ... OMG - you've never seen lavender prices like these. They'd all be from small family operations, and so the price was understandable, as the quantities produced were very limited and the scents were bonkers. But still .... needless to say, I only ever bought small bottles as references.
For nearly 20 years I've been searching for Lavender oils to compete in greatness with those that I had found all those years ago, without having to 'mortgage the farm', as the old saying goes. That time has come, and not only have I found 1 ... but I've found 2! I picked up these 2 batches back in 2019, and I feel it's time to start sharing them.
Back in France, I had access only to a small washer, and we had to hang dry cloths outside to dry. The scent of the fresh air left their unique scent on the cloths, and I would add a drop of Lavender to the drawer I kept my shirts in. This new Linen Attar nearly perfectly captures that scent.
And so, I present to you a special Shibui Attar - reminiscent of the cleanest of linens and the bliss of my early 20's and those magical times spent living abroad in Southern France.
ABOUT SHIBUI SERIES
I had originally made some Attars for some Japanese in-laws.
They were wanting something ... Shibui.
Shibui (渋い) (adjective), shibumi (渋み) (noun), or shibusa (渋さ) (noun) are Japanese words which refer to a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty. Like other Japanese aesthetics terms, such as iki and wabi-sabi, shibui can apply to a wide variety of subjects, not just art or fashion.
When they first smelled them, they said simply, “these are stunningly beautiful”.
Friends and family of theirs eventually started asking for them - and I figured it was high time to start offering these here in my shop. Seems folks love them.
These are simple solo-fleur compositions, as opposed to my more complex Attars that I’ve become quite well-known for. These are less expensive and more straight forward single-flower Attar scents.
Simple. Subtle. Unobtrusive beauty.
With that said...they are stunningly beautiful!
