Kyara al Samundari Sinking : A 44g Piece of History

Jungle : Kerala, formerly known as the Kingdom of Malabar

Species : Agallocha Samundari

Class : Wild-harvested in the 18th or early 19th century

Grade : Colors don’t accurately translate to this material - however, this would be classified as Black Kyara. Consistent with many old woods from every region I’ve seen - the oil/resin is Red and Black. Quite tacky to touch.

Sinking/Non-Sinking : Sinking, 44g

Bead/Carving Grade : Yes

The wood from this area of Kerala was known as Samundari - which translates roughly as “ocean breeze”

I’d say that term is very accurate with this material.

Fear not - this shit is gonna blow your socks off 😉

WHAT DOES IT SMELL LIKE?


Smells like an ocean breeze...like Kyara and Ambergris had a baby. This stuff is no joke.

It’s very unique. Very distinctive.

Also has the Bitterness common to Kyara.

The wood has an unusually captivating floral/fruity note to it. It’s hard to describe. It’s so incredibly complex and unique, I’ve never smelled any other wood quite like this.

It’s a very uplifting scent. I had a patient the other day who was here that had recently had some severe trauma to his thumb. Had gone through extensive surgery. Whole hand was in pain.

I had him smell one of the jars I have the wood in - and the look on his face was priceless. The pain in his hand went away, just like that in the snap of a finger.

The wood is VERY aromatic at room temp.
Just smelling the room temp wood will calm and cool you down and put you at ease.


HISTORY OF THIS WOOD


I’ve been contemplating calling this “Kyara al Hind” or “Kyara al Samundari”

I’m sticking with Kyara al Samundari - and it’s bound to cause a ruckus because no one alive has ever heard of Hindi Kyara.

The collection this piece comes from is the only known batch of this stuff in existence. Maybe some collector somewhere has some in hand - but no known vendors have ever seen or heard of this stuff. It’s a genuine unicorn.

The collection consists of the only woods of this kind I’ve come across, read about - or even heard of. It is a unique, one-of-a-kind discovery of a lifetime.

I’m waiting to hear back from the Japanese companies on their feedback. Considering their ages and vaults - they are the only people that I can think of that might have any reference for them whatsoever. I have samples out to several of my contacts there.

Ironically - every trip I’ve made to Japan I’ve seen some larger pieces of Kyara, ranging from 20+ grams to over 3kg. Not a single one of those bigger pieces has ever been for sale. Owning a piece this size and of this quality is a rare opportunity.

I’ve also gotten a sample into the hands of a gentleman who used to be the buyer for a now deceased King. He’s told me that even he has never seen any wood from India quite like this. He was quite impressed with it. He is also well versed with Kyara and agrees it’s classification of Kyara is warranted and accurate.

In Arab culture this type of wood is known as “Samundari” - but no one has seen or heard of this type of wood since the 19th century. It’s a forgotten classification, so to speak. They’ve become kinda mythical even with old Arab traders, and I’ve only run across a very few who have even heard of it, though never seen any before this.
