Jungle : Kakawit Lucban
Distillation : Copper Deg, Gas Flame
Species : Unspecified, but I suspect a Gyrinops and Cumingiana Co-Distillation

As rare as oils from the Philippines are - rarer still are vintage oils from the region.

This is an interesting batch - as it was actually distilled locally in the Philippines - in copper and over a gas flame.

Also interesting in that it was distilled for a Kuwaiti client that wanted a clean oil. Part of this batch was sold in Kuwait more than a decade ago. The last of it, here, was kept by the owner to age. He kept a few Tolas for himself, and the remainder of it is here with me.

The oil itself is a bit of an enigma. Starts out like a smooth, aged oil of Indian origin that would make anyone who loves aged Hindi’s happy even if it ended right here.

As if to take us on a journey, Kakawit takes a surprising turn towards a breezy, tropically fruity Heart reminiscent of a beautiful Sri Lankan Walla. Although the species on this was never specified - it’s this Walla likeness that leads me to believe it’s most likely a Gyrinops species. Although the drydown has me wondering if there’s some Cumingiana in here, as well. More on that in a moment.

After winding through India and Sri Lanka, tropical fruits and luscious ocean breezes putting our Minds at ease - what I can only describe as incense smoke emerges, made extra bizarre as I don’t detect anything that I’d call smoke in the Top or Heart of the oil. It’s here in the Base that I’d say Kakawit starts to hit me more as a Filippino oil, especially as it smells like a mix of Walla and Cumingiana chips on a nice ashy charcoal - smooth and refined…before drying down to a musk bomb. It’s bizarre and unexpected and oh-so-much fun 🤯

As the oil was distilled locally in the Philippines - I’m positive this is a 100% Filipino origin oil and is not mixed with any Walla or Agallocha - which makes the enigmatic journey through India, Sri Lanka, and crossing the finish line in the Philippines all the more cool.

Given the age of the oil - and we all know how insane the woods coming out of the Philippines were these recent past few years - it’s safe to assume the quality of wood that went in to making this oil more than a decade ago was some pretty damn nice wood. You can smell right here off your wrist.

So the value, in this regard, is like 3 Origins and 2 Species for the price of 1 oil. Quite an adventure!
