Although Jiribam is located in North Western Manipur, it's geographical location is at an intersecting point of Manipur, Southern Assam, and Eastern Sylhet, Bangladesh. I find terroir notes in Jiribam that share some commonalities to all of these regions, which also makes it a bit unique and distinctive from each of them.

This oil was distilled back in 2006, so it's got some good age on it - which also makes it a bit of a rare oil. We found and acquired this particular oil while meeting with one of our wood contacts from the region. It's deep, rich, and as is increasingly the rarer case - genuinely wild. It also has a distinctive and unique scent ... more on that in a moment.

A NOTE OF OBSERVATION BETWEEN NEW GEN AND TRADITIONALLY DISTILLED OILS

A lot of Western and Far Eastern clients these days are looking for oils that are active mind buzzers - usually a class of oils that are termed "New Gen", as it is more of a modern distillation style for Ouds. These types of distillations have clean soaks, and are often devoid of any fermentation, with lower yields and smelling very "clean".

Now, in contrast to the Upward Moving/Mind Buzz of New Gens - Traditional Distillations tend to be very Grounding and Calming. Traditional distillations will have a more Downward Action/Movement - helping to "Anchor, Settle, and Calm" one's mood (I put in quotes as Anchor, Settle, and Calm is an actual class of Medicinals in Chinese Medicine, of which I am a licensed practitioner here in the US).

SO - if you happen to need a little Grounding or are "too often stuck in your head" - I might suggest checking more traditionally-distilled Oud oils, of which I have been working to expand the selection of here at Rising Phoenix. These old-world distillations are potent, rich - and most importantly - very Grounding and Calming to one's mood.

THE SCENT

As I had previously mentioned, Jiribam is located in a unique geographical location, lending Terroir Notes found in Southern Assamese, Bangladeshi Sylheti, and other Manipuri Oils. And even though there is some terroir crossover - this also lends to some distinctiveness. Add to that, also - this particular oil was distilled exclusively from Guf - a particular formation formed from damage on the surface of the trees. Guf is beloved for it's rich - and often very resinous - formations, and Guf Oils are not something I see frequently in the market. Terms like Seufi are better recognized - however it's quite rare to find pure Seufi distillations (of which I offer several pure Seufi's here in the shop). I am increasingly known for my growing collection of unique and unusual specimens - and Jiribam Guf 2006 is not exception.

I've been very fortunate to offer several Guf distillations here in the shop now, and everyone seems to be warmly embracing them for their distinctive scents. I also have several Char distillations - something worth browsing in the shop for, as they are as equally distinctive as Guf oil.

As this is a traditionally distilled oil - expect some very smooth and light fermentation in the form of some Hay Notes. On JK's Fermentation Scale, I'd place Jiribam 2006 as a Brie. Light, smooth, buttery fermentation. Not something to be afraid of, by any means. And the scent! OMG the scent !! This oil has become quite a popular pick.

This oil is soooo much more than Hay. It's dark and complex in all the right ways.

I've recently loaded in Sujanagar 2016 - which has a lovely Milk Chocolaty/Cocoa-ness to it. It smells like fond family memories and warm hugs.

Jiribam Guf 2006, on the other hand, is Bitter Cocoa and Musk, with some Black Tea Notes and Berries and Hints of Spice. If Sujanagar is Chocolate Mousse - Jiribam Guf is Molten Flourless Chocolate Cake.

The Bitter Cocoa is interesting. It reminds me of the dark Ghanese Chocolates the Japanese are so fond of. Not sweet, but with a rounded Bitterness that is much easier on the palate than "Bitter Dark Chocolate" we find here in the US. I find the chocolate note here to be very dense - almost like a lightly sweetened flourless chocolate cake. Rich and mouthwatering.

Tea notes are some of my faves in Oud Oils, and I find some whispers of lightly smoked black breakfast teas - malty and rich, with stone fruits and hints of dark berries and tea-nuances.

Most interestingly - my better half is Japanese, and Asian Noses tend to be really sensitive to any level of fermentation. I mention this because ... she's usually not too fond of when I wear *Traditional* Hindi's - but when I wear Jiribam Guf - she always perks up and asks, "IS THAT MOOSK (Musk) !??!" I can't help but crack up - especially as she asks in a very positively inquisitive tone. For whatever reason, she loves how this oil smells on me, as the bitter cocoa'y muskiness she finds very appealing.

The photo I chose for Jiribam Guf reminded me of the yellow skins of Cocoa Pods 🥰 and I'd say it very much encapsulates the character of this oil.

I'll also mention Jiribam Guf pairs wonderfully with Narcotic/White Florals, Spice Notes, and Sweet Resins. Some Rose in here would be 💪🏼

Priced very friendly, especially for a wild oil with nearly 2 decades of aging on it - this makes for a perfect Daily Wear - and doubles as an excellent pick for special occasions. Consider picking up a Tola to keep you warm and lovable through the coming cooler months.
