This is a really cool batch I picked up awhile back from a collector friend that had commissioned this oil, produced right as all the fun was about to start back in 2020.
Genuine wild Sri Lankan oils are expensive to make. In part due to the rarity of the woods, and also due to the low yields of Gyrinops distillations, in general. Let alone a high grade oil.
Over the last few months I’ve put samples into the hands of a few clients to get feedback, all of which has been exceptionally positive. Has been funny, as well, as it’s a pretty unique profile they couldn’t quite place at first.
SCENT
Adam's Peak is a tall conical sacred mountain located in central Sri Lanka. It is well known for the Sri Pada (Śrī Pāda ; Sinhala: ශ්රී පාද, "sacred footprint"), a 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) rock formation near the summit whose name is also used for the mountain itself (I included a photo of it from 1890).
In Buddhist tradition the print is held to be the footprint of the Buddha, in Sri Lankan Hindu tradition that of Hanuman or Shiva (its Tamil name, சிவனொளிபாதமலை, Sivanolipaathamalai), means "Mountain of Shiva's Light") and in some Islamic and Christian traditions that of Adam or St. Thomas.
The mountain is also known as Mount Malaya in Buddhist sources, particularly the Mahayana Lankavatara Sutra, which states that the Buddha preached this sutra on top of the mountain. According to this sutra, the mountain was the abode of Rāvanā, overlord of the Raskshasas and ruler of Laṅkā.Other names in Sanskrit sources include Mount Lanka, Ratnagiri (Mountain of Gems), Malayagiri (Mount Malaya) or Mount Rohana.
If you can’t tell … it’s a holy place to just about everyone.
I mention this because the oil, itself, has a holy airiness to it. Almost like the coolness of high mountain air, and how Breathing, itself, is necessary for life.
Being such a holy place - the name alludes to the creation story, being the "footprint of the first man", the start of human life.
In Chinese, the character for “Breath” is 息
It’s a little small to see, but the upper portion is the character for “Self”, and the lower character is for “Heart”. One’s breath is literally the “Center of Oneself”
I’m really going out in to left field, here - but this oil reminded me of this concept of the Breath and that of the Center of Ourselves. Adam Reborn being a very centering and grounding oil, like the Breath of Life, itself.
Right from the vial the it’s complexity is apparent.
Upon application to the skin, an Airy Coolness blasts the nose, like a cool morning up in the high mountain air.
There’s a note to it that I can think of only as “Blue”. It’s not fruity or floral, per se, but it makes me think of the color blue. I’ve asked the few customers who have received samples of this of their thoughts on that blue’ness - and they pretty much said all the same thing, “I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it just smells awesome!”
It’s an airy oil - backed up by solid woody Oudiness.the few folks that have had a sneak peek, although they couldn’t place where the oil was from, every single, one of them guessed correctly that it was from an island due to that airiness. They also mostly guessed correctly that it was a Gyrinops (a few thought Filaria) - as the resin note is very apparent in the drydown.
The oil is a complexity beast, with an air of Holiness to it. Something I think we will all agree upon when you smell it.
Small batch of oil, and one definitely worthy of any collection. Grab some while available !
