Those not familiar with Soil or Buried Agarwoods - when a tree naturally dies in a forest, it eventually decays and breaks down. The wood fibers wear away, but what is left behind is resin and oil-rich wood that doesn't break down so easily. Trees that don't get buried have a distinctive odor profile - they are sweet and refined. These dead "above ground" trees produce "Agarwood Deadwood" chips.

Even more rarely, when a tree dies it may get buried beneath a particular type of soil - imparting the unique flavor profile of that particular Terroir. This rare type of Agarwood is known as Soil or Buried Agarwood.

Very few regions are known for their Soil Agarwoods...

In Cambodia - there are certain regions famed for the Red Soil and Red Water from these areas that impart a distinct flavor to the woods and oils produced from them.

In Vietnam - there are Red, Yellow and Black Soils that have buried long dead trees, imparting their particular flavors. In fact...I have both Viet Red and Yellow Soil Powders and Dusts available here in the shop. Be sure to check those out! ;)

Today, you have the rare opportunity to get your hands on a little known and incredibly rare type of Soil Agarwood from the famed Red Soil of Brunei.

Brunei woods already have a distinctive flavor profile - often used in place of Kyara by Japanese incense makers. Even more distinctive is the scent of long dead and buried Brunei woods in their particular local Red Soil deep in the jungle.

The scent is hard to put to words. It is obviously Brunei wood - with a rich 'je ne sais quois' complexity that you find only in high grade soil woods. A little can be blended with other materials to impart a unique and distinctive Agarwood flavor, blend with other Agarwood powders to add a complex "umami" note - or use on its own for a sublime experience.

As most soil woods are kind of flimsy (due to the breaking down of the more fibrous aspects of the wood from being long dead) - I've gone ahead and ground these down to a very fine powder. Easy to use, and a little goes a long way.

This powder is best heated gently on low heat on an electric heater. Soil woods tend to be more temperature sensitive than "live tree" woods - as they don't have the wood fibers present to retard the heat. As such - this is a delicate powder best enjoyed Kodo-style.

I have near a kilo of this powder available. It's a spectacular scent and a rare opportunity to smell this rare type of Red Soil wood from Brunei at a very friendly price.

Enjoy!
