Black Musk 2022 - Traditional Indian Attar

I’ve been long on the hunt for some traditionally produced, natural, Indian Attars. I’ve been on the hunt, far and wide - and have found a few to my liking.

“Black Musk” is a ubiquitous term for any number of oils sold in the Subcontinent and the Gulf. Some are sold as if they are oils made from deer musk. Some sold as if made from “Gazelle Musk”. Some smell like burning rubber tires. Other like a mishmash of synthetic musks. All of these products being marketed above are largely, if not entirely - synthetic.

But the real stuff, if you can find it, is a traditionally distilled Indian Attar, composed of various - often dozens of - materials distilled into one another over several months.

This is what we have here with Phoenix’s Black Musk. A traditional production containing dozens of woods, resins, spices and florals distilled over 4 months. It’s taken me quite some time to get here - and now I am happy to present to you this oil, along with a few other traditional productions.

You’ll find Phoenix’s Black Musk to be sweetly musky - with hints of florals and spices and ‘je ne sais quoi’ - collected across the Subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
