I've been trying to make some really diverse incense sticks - stuff from places rarely seen any longer, as well as from places few have even heard of. This falls in the "hard to find region, rarely heard of mountain"

Came across this incredible batch of wood from Aceh - specifically from Hulumasen Mountain on the interior of Aceh Peninsula, located on the northern tip of Sumatra Island.

Candan/Hirta is an incredibly difficult Agarwood subspecies to find. When batches ARE found, there are usually a few Hirta pieces mixed in with Malaccensis and then charged a premium for the rare subspecies. Here we have a batch that is 100% Hirta/Candan - and the chips we ground up to make this batch was absolutely glorious!

SCENT

Part of what makes Hirta/Candan so expensive is the rarity of the subspecies. They are only found in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, and even then - they are few and far between. They are a bit of a loner species.

Generally considered the creme de la creme of Hirta/Candan are those trees found in the Aceh Province of Sumatra. The challenge being ... they've been over harvesting trees there for quite some time, and the remaining trees are deep (DEEP) in the interior jungles. They ain't easy to get to, and there terrain is very mountainous and few road penetrate the area.

Indonesian woods, as a general statement - especially from Sumatra - can have a "bug spray" minty top note that folks tend to love or hate and are generally found in the Malaccensis species on the island. What makes Hirta/Candan so beloved is that there are NO minty/bug spray notes ... cha ching!

Hirta/Candan is known for tending towards one of two poles - syrupy sweetness on the one end - spiciness on the other.

We got REALLY lucky - this batch of wood was not overly syrupy - and the spiciness smells almost like a superbly spicy Vietnamese batch of incense. I almost couldn't believe my nose when I lit up the first stick ... it was as if Aceh and Vietnam had a baby - best of both worlds!

We ground up over half a kg of gorgeous Super and Sinking chips. Big thick suckers ... not broken chips.

It's hard enough getting material from this area - I decided to make a nice batch from the entire lot of fantastic material, and this time (after a tremendous amount of repairs on equipment and more experimentation that anyone should have to do) we were able to work out 1.2mm sticks so you get more burn for the weight coupled with a superbly refined scent that is all spice and resin and a hint of sweetness.

Monkoh quality - worth stashing a few tubes.
