This is an interesting batch of Sandalwood - as it takes us all the way back to the first few months of what was to become a rollercoaster of global lockdowns that we all got to experience as "Covid".

In June of 2020 I was offered a batch of wood from the mountains of the Malabar Coast - modern day Kerala, in southwest India.

Out of that 200kg batch, I selected the best 5kg of red meat heart and root wood. You can see some photos of what we selected, above.

It's interesting as this was all collected during those initial months of lockdowns, in June of 2020. Travel was terribly complicated, especially in India - so I imagine the movements of the wood was an adventure in and of itself! It was December of 2020 when we got around to juicing the wood.

I had gotten about 180g of oil from it - not much, and wasn't planning on releasing any of it and hanging onto it for myself. But - since I've started doing some of these small releases, I thought it might be fun to let a little of it go. This is a one-off batch, so be sure to grab some, as it's a one-and-done oil.

Bottling :
I'm not using the boxed bottles for this one - but I've got a nice glass dipstick fancy bottle that I'll use (can also see in the photos), as well as numbering the releases. It's gonna look really cool on your shelf !

THE SCENT

Scent-wise, this is a nice and unique Sandalwood oil. Different from the Mysore oils I produce, and also from the Maharashtra releases I've done (of which B2 is currently still in the shop).

It's got a hint of sweetness to it, reminiscent of my Sri Lankan Umami Series - of which I also just released 2 vintage batches I produced back in 2019 that I've been hanging onto. (If you like almond croissants - be sure to check those two Umami oils out !) I wouldn't go as far to say that Malabar has that Umami almond note to it ... but it's a nice hint of gourmand sweetness layered over lacquered Sandalwood floor boards.

It smells old without smelling ancient, if that makes sense. Almost like the scent of old books and wooden floors. Like an old Sandalwood Library.

There's an airiness to it that I imagine comes from the coastal mountains where this batch of wood was harvested from. Maybe even a hint of saltiness to it - due to the proximity to the ocean that the mountains there have.

I wouldn't call Malabar a milky Sandalwood oil. Don't think I'd call it buttery, either. It's more of the light gourmand facet, with some sandalWOODINESS, and an interesting airiness to it. Maybe even a little smooth and creamy without smelling milky. It's certainly a curious little gem of an oil !

Not to mention the rarity factor ... when's the last time you saw a pure Sandalwood oil from Kerala? I'm not sure I've ever seen one, let alone in our market here in the West. So this is a true novelty - a PURE Malibar Coastal Sandalwood Oil to add to your chest of treasures !

ABOUT Indian Mysore Sandalwood

The famed Oil of India...

In today's marketplace, true and pure Indian Sandalwood is very hard to come by. Much of the Sandalwood sold these days comes from other countries such as Sri Lanka, Australia, and New Caledonia. Although these oils are nice...they often fall short of the depth and personality of the famed Mysore region of India. That is ... until Rising Phoenix distills it !!

Today, much of the Sandalwood oil produced in India comes from outside of India, and is shipped there and mixed with various amounts of Indian Sandalwood, or the pure Sandalwood oil is diluted with petroleum based chemicals like DPG.

If you have been in search of GENUINE Indian Sandalwood Oils ... your search has come to an end ! Rising Phoenix offers only the best and most unique odor profiles from India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Hawai’i, and beyond !
