I find terroir notes in Jiribam that share some commonalities to all of these regions, which also makes it a bit unique and distinctive from each of them.

This oil was distilled back in 2006, so it's got some good age on it - which also makes it a bit of a rare oil. We found and acquired this particular oil while meeting with one of our wood contacts from the region. It's deep, rich, and as is increasingly the rarer case - genuinely wild. It also has a distinctive and unique scent ... more on that in a moment.

A NOTE OF OBSERVATION BETWEEN NEW GEN AND TRADITIONALLY DISTILLED OILS

A lot of Western and Far Eastern clients these days are looking for oils that are active mind buzzers - usually a class of oils that are termed "New Gen", as it is more of a modern distillation style for Ouds. These types of distillations have clean soaks, and are often devoid of any fermentation, with lower yields and smelling very "clean".

Now, in contrast to the Upward Moving/Mind Buzz of New Gens - Traditional Distillations tend to be very Grounding and Calming. Traditional distillations will have a more Downward Action/Movement - helping to "Anchor, Settle, and Calm" one's mood (I put in quotes as Anchor, Settle, and Calm is an actual class of Medicinals in Chinese Medicine, of which I am a licensed practitioner here in the US).

SO - if you happen to need a little Grounding or are "too often stuck in your head" - I might suggest checking more traditionally-distilled Oud oils, of which I have been working to expand the selection of here at Rising Phoenix. These old-world distillations are potent, rich - and most importantly - very Grounding and Calming to one's mood.

THE SCENT

As I had previously mentioned, Jiribam is located in a unique geographical location, lending Terroir Notes found in Southern Assamese, Bangladeshi Sylheti, and other Manipuri Oils. And even though there is some terroir crossover - this also lends to some distinctiveness. Add to that, also - this particular oil was distilled exclusively from Guf - a particular formation formed from damage on the surface of the trees. Guf is beloved for it's rich - and often very resinous - formations, and Guf Oils are not something I see frequently in the market. Terms like Seufi are better recognized - however it's quite rare to find pure Seufi distillations (of which I offer several pure Seufi's here in the shop). I am increasingly known for my growing collection of unique and unusual specimens - and Jiribam Guf 2006 is not exception.

I've been very fortunate to offer several Guf distillations here in the shop now, and everyone seems to be warmly embracing them for their distinctive scents. I also have several Char distillations - something worth browsing in the shop for, as they are as equally distinctive as Guf oil.

As this is a traditionally distilled oil - expect some very smooth and light fermentation in the form of some Hay Notes. On JK's Fermentation Scale, I'd place Jiribam 2006 as a Brie. Light, smooth, buttery fermentation. Not something to be afraid of, by any means. And the scent! OMG the scent !! This oil has become quite a popular pick.

This oil is soooo much more than Hay. It's dark and complex in all the right ways.

I've recently loaded in Sujanagar 2016 - which has a lovely Milk Chocolaty/Cocoa-ness to it. It smells like fond family memories and warm hugs.

Jiribam Guf 2006, on the other hand, is Bitter Cocoa and Musk, with some Black Tea Notes and Berries and Hints of Spice. If Sujanagar is Chocolate Mousse - Jiribam Guf is Molten Flourless Chocolate Cake.

The Bitter Cocoa is interesting. It reminds me of the dark Ghanese Chocolates the Japanese are so fond of. Not sweet, but with a rounded Bitterness that is much easier on the palate than "Bitter Dark Chocolate" we find here in the US. I find the chocolate note here to be very dense - almost like a lightly sweetened flourless chocolate cake. Rich and mouthwatering.

Tea notes are some of my faves in Oud Oils, and I find some whispers of lightly smoked black breakfast teas - malty and rich, with stone fruits and hints of dark berries and tea-nuances.

Most interestingly - my better half is Japanese, and Asian Noses tend to be really sensitive to any level of fermentation. I mention this because ... she's usually not too fond of when I wear *Traditional* Hindi's - but when I wear Jiribam Guf - she always perks up and asks, "IS THAT MOOSK (Musk) !??!" I can't help but crack up - especially as she asks in a very positively inquisitive tone. For whatever reason, she loves how this oil smells on me, as the bitter cocoa'y muskiness she finds very appealing.

The photo I chose for Jiribam Guf reminded me of the yellow skins of Cocoa Pods 🥰 and I'd say it very much encapsulates the character of this oil.

I'll also mention Jiribam Guf pairs wonderfully with Narcotic/White Florals, Spice Notes, and Sweet Resins. Some Rose in here would be 💪🏼

Priced very friendly, especially for a wild oil with nearly 2 decades of aging on it - this makes for a perfect Daily Wear - and doubles as an excellent pick for special occasions. Especially with years of age on them, in much the same way that wines will mellow with age.

One of the character strengths of traditional oils cooked meticulously over wood fires is that there is a variable temp from the wood (as opposed to steady, consistent heat from gas). Anyone who cooks understands how wood-fire cooked foods have a depth and complexity of flavor that is unmatched by other methods. The same can be said of any well-made traditional oil ... the key here being properly made!

The scent on this is just gorgeous, and if you’ve been following my work, you know I break down Incense notes into 2 categories :

1. This is indeed from the same distillation family, distilled the same year, from a different single ancient tree.

Whereas 1941 Naga Ateek is hints of smoke wrapped about a deeply fruity hooka bar tobacco - Mokokchung Ateek is hints of fruit hiding inside a blazing charcoal chip. Usually fewer than 100 bottles will be sold world wide. And to find an 80+ year old bottle - you could have a down payment on a house!

I only mention this to emphasize just how rare it is to find an oil like this made available to the public, and at a price that is less than a really old bottle of whiskey - and at a price tag far below what you'd expect on a dram of a bottle that old. These are historical relics, juiced from ancient trees at a time when all the best wood would have been tossed into the pot to make the richest, most excellent oils that simply are not possible to reproduce today in any kind of scalable capacity.

THE SCENT

First and foremost, I want to say that this oil smells ... Nice also that I'm able to give a specific geolocation from Kumlong - one of the towns inside the Mokokchung area of Nagaland. Considering so many woods from India or Bangladesh are sold simply as "Hindi" or "Assam" - it's nice to be very specific, and I always do my best to narrow it down as much as possible so we can enjoy the specific Terroirs of where the woods and oils are coming from.

As I mentioned, mountainous Agarwoods can develop some unique scents - and there is an airiness to this oil that reminds me a bit of some Borneo oils. It's not oceanic, like many oils from nearby the ocean can develop, so it's not like a Borneo in that regard. But rather - an airiness like that ozonic scent you get when trekking up in the mountains. There is the scent of elevation in this oil. Of stony rock outcroppings and dry forest air. The scent of campfires far away in the distance.

This is an easy oil to wear. I'd place it on JK's Cheese Scale as a Grassy Brie - very light fermentation, with a dry grassy note that's more aged dried grass than fresh green. Not Hay, either, mind you. Just a lovely dried grassy note like you'll sometimes find in some cheeses.

I also detect both types of Incense, as I denote them. Both a light smokiness - like heating chips on charcoal, as well as an incense'y note - which is not a smokey note, but reminiscent of incense. More incense'y - and only the slightest hints of wafting smoke peeking through on occasion.

I'd say this is more of a Dry Oil - it's not really Savory or Sweet. More of a Dry Incense, hints of smoke, grassiness - and high mountain airiness.

Not much Hay or Leather - although there is maybe some hints of chewy toffee in the underbelly of the oil.

As I said, it's a very easy to wear oil. It’s not a Hindi. 🧐

It’s a potent oil. Can tell as much from the strong scent from the bottle. Very Royal smelling and feeling, if ever there were such a thing. It’s an enveloping scent - one that kinda makes my eyes want to roll back in my head. Less of a mind zinger and more of a rooting my feet a mile down in the ground kinda oil. Makes me feel like one of those Maoi Heads on Easter Island. Meditative. Zen-like. Buddha’s Breath kinda stuff.

Opens up Smelling like the Philippines, although I wouldn’t say it smells of any singular place. Smells more Expansive than that. That rich, Cumingiana floral scent that’s a little reminiscent of old Cambodi. There’s 1 King.

The oil continues to develop, and I can’t quite place if it smells like a Silani Gyrinops - or an Indian Agallocha. It smells like both. It smells like neither. Alternating and morphing from one to the other. The 2nd and 3rd Kings sitting for a conversation over tea.

If Hindis are the Kings of Agarwood - Sri Lankans are the Jewel in their Crown.

The floral tone of the Filippino Cumingiana combines nicely with the oceanic vibe from the Silani. That oceanic Silani tone melds beautifully into that deep, sweet Hay and Amber from the Hindi.

3 Kings. They tend to have some really floral notes that I feel like I can sink my teeth into.

This oil is a co-distillation of shavings and broken chips from the Haflong and Haranga Jao region of Southern Assam.

+Shavings from high grade Haflong chips were used to produce this oil, along with shavings from incense chips from Haranga Jao.

++The High Grade Haflong chips were used to produce a SUPERB pure Haflong oil I'll be releasing soon. It's piercing, in a very positive manner. I want to dump it all over me. I wouldn't say it's brain piercing ... more like a soul piercing. I don't know how to say it other than ... this oil touches me in an 18 and Older kinda way.

Although this is a traditional distillation - it's very clean. I'd place this as a Mozarella on JK's Fermentation Scale. Very light and clean, and oh-so-smooth.

Yes, there are some Hay and Leather notes throughout, but they are not overpowering. Seamlessly weaving, I'd say, through the other aspects of the oil. It's a charismatic oil that wears like an old pair of jeans, or your favorite pair of leather boots. You can't help but feel good when wearing them.

I get this "Je ne sais quois" floral quality from it. The oil, itself, is a lovely golden-orange color - and I'd say the flowery notes are reminiscent of its striking, visual color.

There is an almost saffron spiciness to it. That's part of its floral tone, I mentioned above. Some Hindi woods have a "Zafran Note" - I'd say that is what I'm smelling. And Zafran really gets my engines revving. But it's more than that. You'll soon see what I mean ...

I love Tea Notes in Ouds, and both the color of the oil, itself - as well as it's potent aroma - reminds me of a stiff cup of orange'y mountainous Assam tea. Very rich and bold. The kind of oil that'll wake you up in the morning with a jolt.

The drydown is like those old animal skin rugs I used to see in my childhood. Furry. Leathery. Cozy. I used to love rolling around and sleeping on those old fur-skin rugs, and HHJ is really stroking those aromatic memories of mine from my youth. We don't really see rugs like those any longer (thankfully) ... but I do think there are DNA memories from our more primal histories, clad in leathers and furs long before the threads of cotton and linen.

Haflong Haranga Jao manages to dig down deep and stoke those aromatic ties wound deep in my genes.

Potent. Krishnai Char is a superb example.

For those not familiar with the term, Char is a type of Agarwood formation found in long dead trees and tree stumps from long ago harvested trees.

Essentially a tree will fall over or was cut and harvested sometime in the past...but the stump and roots didn’t die. They’ll go on to form Char, kept alive by the surrounding trees. A phenomenon only now gaining understanding in the West - but long ago understood in the East. Char can come from trees that “died” decades, even centuries ago. Makes ya look at stumps in the forests surrounding us in a whole new light !

Maybe you’ve hard of Char. Maybe you’ve even burned some. But I’ll bet you’ve never seen an oil produced from it. These are Ouds that get your blood coursing with a roar.

These particular Char formations, although known and occasionally appreciated in the East - are especially beloved in the Gulf. Deeply Fruity hooka bar tobacco - dry, not sweet. Some hints of fruit leather, a waft of something we might call Hay - and ancient temple wood floors. Many don't realize it - but different parts of the tree, as well as different types of infections - all can have distinctive olfactory characteristics. Seufi oils are a mainstay in Gulf tastes - but as you can imagine, the quantity of oils being sold contrasted against the number of branches to be distilled ... you'll be lucky if a "Seufi Oud" on the mass market is 3-5% actual Seufi. Even that small percentage can impart a distinctive flavor to an oil that sets the mouths of lovers of Hindi Ouds to salivating.

Naharani Seufi, in contrast, is 100% Seufi. This is an unusual rarity generally found only direct from distillers or from exclusive VIP corners in select locations, and only in small quantities. Commercial companies usually blend oils like this in to big batches (rarely do you get single distillation oils from big companies).

In this instance - we acquired this directly from the distiller who produced this oil back in 2017 - pure and uncut, and distilled exclusively from the upper branches from old trees - all around 70-90 years old.

So - knowing it's going to be a distinctive Seufi scent, I'm sure you're wondering - how's it smell, JK !?

THE SCENT

This is an interesting Seufi oil. Dry roasted nuts. Not overly savory. Not much Sweetness. At least not on the front end.

Naharani is an interesting area - well known for it's tea plantations, and a superb tea area at that. Although I wouldn't call this oil tea-like, I would say that it is like a good stiff cup of English Tea with no sugar and a little splash of milk. Natural sweetness of the tea and milk shining through.

Although not what I'd call a sweet oil, It does develop a little bit of maltiness after 30 or so minutes of wearing. Hints of smoke and dry incense form the Heart of the oil, with that lightly malted sweetness poking its head out here and there.

The dry down, I would argue, does have a little hint of dry tea leaves in there. Just a hint of fruits and leatheriness common to the teas from the Naharani area.

On the JK's Scale of Cheeses - this is a Nutty Brie. Very little fermentation. Good milkiness. Not overly daring. Easy to wear, especially if you like friendly Hindis that are not New Gen's.

As a comparison - 1999 Mokokchung Seufi is a VERY gourmand oil. TONS of chewy toasted nuts and caramel.

2017 Naharani Seufi, by contrast, is dry-roasted nuts, incense, with hints of hay and suede. Both Seufi oils, but quite different characters.

Seufi oils are distilled from the infected branches of Agarwood trees - and by default, they tend to be produced in small quantities. This oil has 6 years of aging on it already, so although it'll continue to develop over the years, I don't imagine we will see drastic changes to it in the short term. It's prime for wearing right now, no waiting necessary. Giggly

*This is a small batch, mind you - so this one will likely go more quickly than some of the other oils in the shop.

Be sure to grab some and find out just why Seufi oils are so highly beloved !

Materials: 2017 Naharani Seufi Oud Oil,Pure Seufi Oud Oil
dhansiri-ateek-1987-nagaland-hindi-oud-oil-traditional-wood-fired-indian-dehn-al-oudh-pure-artisan-oud-oil-rising-phoenix-perfumery
Dhansiri Ateek 1987 : Nagaland Hindi Oud Oil - Traditional Wood Fired Indian Dehn al Oudh - Pure Artisan Oud Oil - Rising Phoenix Perfumery
Class : Wild : 200+ Year Old Tree - Ateek Series
Species : Agallocha, Single Live Tree
Distillation : Traditional Wood-Fired Deg and Bapkha, Copper - Minimally Fermented
Distillation Date : 1987 - First 12 Hours
Distillation Type : Vapourous/Resinous/Varnish/Whiskey/Floral

**Be sure to read the full description. Keep an eye open for those.

THE SCENT

This is a really unique scent. Distilled from a single, old tree at least 200 years old, with nearly 4 decades of aging on it - this is quite a rare specimen.

The scent, itself, is exceptional. It's a Traditional Oil, but don't let that scare you. What little fermentation there was has been dramatically smoothed over with time ; like old whiskey that loses its bite. To my nose, I wouldn't even say there are any fermentation notes. Rather, more of a very gentle leather and hay, but they aren't in the forefront. More of a textural quality, layered over a transcendental experience.

It's a dark oil profile - one that I usually call a Whiskey Profile - meaning some smoke or peat to it. The smoke, however, is secondary.

More than that - this is an exceptionally rare profile of oil that most connoisseurs would call VAPOROUS/VARNISH. These types of profiles are near impossible to find, and are highly coveted once they are. Usually found only in very aged oils, made from exceptional base quality material. Nobody quite knows the secret to distilling these - and I highly suspect it is a profile quality that can only be developed over time - making these excedingly rare gems that belong in every serious collection.

Interestingly, this oil reminds me of some scents from my childhood. I grew up in New Jersey before moving to Atlanta in late elementary school. I can't even pinpoint what it is that it reminds me of, except that it smells ANCIENT, and that it invokes a nostalgia that I can't quite explain.

Even more strangely - there is a lightness to it - as it is also contains some floral and spicy aspects to it. "Spicy", as Indians would say. Don't expect "cinnamon and spice" notes. The floral tone to it I wouldn't say smells like any particular kind of flower - but rather that floral quality that the best Nagaland woods are known for. Not right out in the open, but they are there, waiting to be discovered, adding to the tonal quality of that intoxicating vapor.

There is a definite hint of smokiness to the oil, like a hunger for delicious wafts of incense smoke that only a chip on charcoal can satiate. It's not overpowering ... and it'll leave you licking your lips for more. Paired with that coveted vaporous note ... this is sure to knock your socks off.

There's a lot of development on the skin. Twists and turns. I've noticed it also shape-shifts as I walk from inside in the air conditioning to outside in the heat and humidity. This oil has a lot of personality. A lot of faces. I imagine this will be fun to wear in any season. Certainly suitable for celebratory occasions, as you will feel like a Sheikh wearing it.

I've sent samples to a number of clients and gotten a lot of feedback on it. Funny, and highly positive feedback. Funny because, really complex oils like these usually need several wearings for your brain to wrap itself around what it's smelling. There's no context in most of our cultures for the brain to compare it against, so it'll have to form new pathways to interpret it. Don't be surprised if you don't quite warm up to Dhansiri on first application ... but by the 3rd or 4th have grown to love and crave it. I see this happen a lot in oils like this. All the feedback I've gotten on this oil has been so - with several loving it right away.

You'll notice a superbly vaporous resin note to the oil, as well. Deeply resinous and piercing, like peering into a bottomless pit that somehow manages to peer back into your soul. Like points of light rippling on the deep ocean's surface at night. Like the green eyes of a Jaguar from the jungle's darkest night.

If you've ever heard the term "VAPOROUS" or "VARNISH" - this oil belongs in your collection as a reference. Use it to train your nose - and to recognize this rare quality in other oils.

Dhansiris 1987 is a super Ateek Series oil. One that belongs on the shelf of every collector.

It has an ancientness to its odor profile. Old antique furniture. Rustic library. Ancient spaces. Old jungle. Vaporous Resin !! Peer into its depths ... and it'll peer back.

This is a really excellent oil, and I hope you'll find some space for it in your collection. Way above.

This is mountain oud, which some would consider a distinct category in and of itself.
This is also a pure Seufi Oud - also a distinct category in and of itself. More on that shortly.

Hunters have long known that agarwood trees growing in mountainous areas yield the sweetest smelling wood, especially those from rocky cliffs.

Much of Nagaland is known for its gentle sweetness of flowers and wildflower honey present in the woods, and very lucky when those floral notes carry over in to the oil. It is already the well-known key feature of agarwood from this region, but extracting the oil can highlight those nuances.

You'll notice this oil has a some good years on it, too - which is why I'm adding it to the Ateek Series - a series of some very aged oils that I'll be releasing through 2022, and possibly in to 2023 if I don't get them all out before the end of the year. These are some real gems, and testaments to Time, History, and the Quality of Yesteryear. Distilled by veterans in the field often long gone from this earth. Be sure to search "Ateek" in the shop to discover some of these unique olfactory opportunities.

THE SCENT

I mentioned before that this is a pure Seufi Oud oil - and that Seufi oils are a class in and of themselves.

Seufi oils are produced exclusively from Agarwood found in the branches.

Mokokchung Seufi, in contrast, is 100% Seufi. This is an unusual rarity generally found only direct from distillers or from exclusive VIP corners in select locations, and only in small quantities. Commercial companies usually blend oils like this in to big batches (rarely do you get single distillation oils from big companies).

In this instance - we acquired this directly from the distiller who produced this oil back in 1999 - pure and uncut, and distilled exclusively from the top 1/3 of branches from 100 + year old trees. 5 trees over a century old, to be exact. A real treat, to say the least.

So - knowing it's going to be a distinctive Seufi scent, I'm sure you're wondering - how's it smell, JK !?

As one client joked, "Like the toasted nuts of those that would destroy me - or not send the oils I paid for" haha

In all seriousness - the opening notes are that of savory toasted nuts. Maybe not of those that wish ill of me ... but seriously, toasted nuts. hehe

The first time I smelled this oil it took me back to when I was a kid when my folks would take me to the Indiana State Fair (the madre is from Indiana - and her side of the family is still out there). Remember those cinnamon almonds and toasted cashews that would scent the air as you walked by the stands? That's the first memory that struck me upon smelling this oil.

The oil transitions from Savory Toasted Nuts in to a Sensual Hay and Sweet Jaggery - that sweet, wood fired coconut sugar that if you've never had it, you need to. The Hay note in this is just gorgeous. It's not a fermented, farm'y hay note. Rather it's that sweet clover bails of hay that you smell in a barn - aging for winter. That sweetness from the Hay and that almost wood-fired coconut sugar note make me melt every time I open the bottle and swipe.

As if the oil hasn't been enough of an adventure - the Dry Down begins to express hints of Dark Cocoa, and the Hay notes transition into a Leatheriness that highlights the Seufi Resin oh-so-beautifully.

The unique geographical mountainous region of Mokokchung, coupled with the exclusive top branches of centennial trees used to produce this exclusive Seufi oil yields an exquisite savory sweetness that highlights the pronounced aroma of the region. The oil has had 23 gorgeous years of aging at present, to boot - rounding out the oil in much the same way whiskies get sweeter and smoother with time. Oils like this are not found out on the market, and when they are on those rare instances - they hide in vaulted VIP exclusive access, often never seeing the light of day for the likes of you and me.

This is a rare opportunity to add to your Ateek collection a superb example of a 100% aged Seufi oil, juiced exclusively from the top 1/3 of branches from 5 centennial trees. I sincerely hope a bottle of 1999 Mokokchung Seufi joins the archive in a good home like yours.

Materials: 1999 Mokokchung Seufi,Pure Oud Oil

Class : Wild
Jungles : Manipur and Meghalaya Co-distillation
Distillation : June - August 2020 - Stainless - 7 day Non-Barnyard Soak - STEAM Distillation

This oil took 3 runs, each for 3+ weeks of steam distillation for a total of 10 weeks.

We used ultra premium shavings that were as black as the woods they were cleaned from to produce it, and it took ages to put enough material together to juice this in our smallest still. Which begs the question - what to do when you have small batches of shavings and chips, but it’s not quite enough to run a single distillation? Combine them, of course!

For fun, I made a batch combining Filippino, Sri Lankan, and Hindi woods that I called 3 Kings. I reserved some of the woods to make a second, fun, experimental batch, which we have here.

For this experimental batch, i decided to combine some increasingly rare wild Hainan wood. We changed the distillation parameters a little bit to pull out some different accents from the woods - aiming for something a little sweeter (from the Hainan), and maybe a little more resinous. I wanted this to be rich and luxurious - and I think you’ll agree, we’ve done just that.

This is a batch we produced back in February of 2022 from an amalgamation of shavings and chips from 8 different locations in 4 different countries - detailed above. This is not simply true. What IS true is that Time can smooth some rough edges - but simply put - shit oils that are aged are simply old shitty oils. If you want a fine aged oil, it's gotta start out as a fine new oil.

I used to live in Avignon, capital of the French Cote du Rhone wine country. Known for their tannic wines that often needed aging to smooth the rough edges. I used to study wine - and I was fascinated how vinters could spot a wine that needed to be sold quickly - and one that needed to be set aside, knowing that additional age would magically cause the wine to blossom in a way that only Time could do. It is an art that few can master, but when they do - it's a fireworks display that drops jaws.

Like aged fine whiskey or wine or tea - aging an oil can add layers of complexity and character in a way that no other process can duplicate. Generally speaking, a little aging can smooth out some rough edges on an oil - but you can't fix ugly. On the other hand - distillers - myself, included - will sometimes set aside great batches for further aging, knowing full well that a great oil now will yield an exceptional oil down the line.

Which brings us to my Ateek Series - a collection of oils that I have collected, directly from collectors or from the distillers, themselves - that have shelved oils in the pursuit of showcasing what age can do to beautify an already excellent specimen.

THE SCENT

One of the greatest ironies of traditional Hindi distillations is that many non-Arabs (Hindi distillations tend to be destined for the Gulf Market, after all) find traditional oils and fermentation to smell like farmland/manure/fermentation. This will generally yield an oil that smells of some level of cheese - all the way from Bries and Camemberts to the far end of the spectrum of Blue Cheeses. I do not classify rot the same as fermentation - the same way that cheese is not the same as rotten or spoiled milk. Now the irony to this is - many Arabs and Subcontinentals will say that traditional/fermented oils smell SWEET. I think this categorization differs from how, say Western or Asian noses perceive fermentation - as I detail above. However, Jiribam Ateek 2000 I would say is categorically a genuinely Sweet, Ambery Oud oil.

I see this happen over and over again when I have visitors to my workshop - and it's even more pronounced in mixed company. A white or Asian visitor will say, "I smell animals!" whereas an Indian, Pakistani, or Arab visitor will exclaim, "It's so sweet!" Just goes to show that aromatic context matters, and that there is no accounting for tastes.

Jiribam Ateek 2000 I think everyone will agree - is a sweet oil. Yes, there is some barn and hay and leather, but the overall personality I find in this oil is AMBER. It's a pleasantly sweet, Ambery vintage Oud that's easy to wear and brings a smile to my face every time I apply some. And the Dry Down ... soooo sweet! I feel a little bit like I am eating one of those Indian Sweet/Sour candies ... tart fermentation paired with the natural sweetness of Amber.

On top of that delightful Sweetness is the beloved character of Manipuri "King of Indian Oud". Manipur has a flavor profile that many in the game recognize as the most sought after flavor profile, that of the wild and lush forests of Manipur.

Add to that pleasant sweetness and Kingly geo profile what only 23 years of aging can add, and you've got Jiribam Ateek 2000.

I've had quite a few Jiribam oils and woods in the shop at this point, and I think it's safe to say that they have all been well received. It opens up a bit more quickly on the back of my hand - and right under my nose on my chin, maintains a little more punchiness. That's not a bad thing, mind you. Being right under the nose I am aware of it quite acutely - which has been fun in the heat down here.

The nuttiness gives way to hints of incense smoke, toasted oak barrels, and some sweetness akin to toffee, with that savory roasted milk note that keeps wanting to make my mouth water.

Over the hours, a growing hay note emerges, coupled with more of a suede than a leather note. Drying down, eventually, to that beloved resin that we call Guf.

This oil has 7 years of aging on it already, so although it'll continue to develop over the years, I don't imagine we will see drastic changes to it in the short term. It's prime for wearing right now, no waiting necessary. Giggidy

-------

I've been slowly trying to educate folks on some of the industry terminology - as often different areas have different types of formations or lingo for those formations. Terms like Guf and Char are often found in Gulf/Arab markets - and are commonly used terms in the Subcontinent.

In this case, I'd like to introduce you to Guf.

WHAT IS GUF ?

Guf is a type of formation that is similar to Char. For those that are not familiar with Char ...

Char is formed in naturally felled trees where the tree may come down and seemingly be dead, but portions of the roots or trunk continue to live. Char is also formed in the stumps and roots of previously harvested trees - again, where one would think the stump dead, but actually goes on living for years, or as is more often the case - for decades, even centuries. More on this in one of the Char listings, but for now - suffice it to say that Char and Guf are similar formations.

How is Guf different? Guf is found in the outer portions of the trunk and large branches where there has been injury to the tree. Where Char comes from "dead stumps" - Guf is formed in live trees.

Guf is a highly sought out formation in Khaleeji/Gulf markets for its resin density and very enjoyable scent.

It's rare to find woods from Mizoram, let alone oils produced from this specific type of formation.

Agarwood from mountains and elevation always have distinctive scents - and this batch is no exception. Nice also that I'm able to give a specific geolocation from Lunglei. Considering so many woods from India or Bangladesh are sold simply as "Hindi" or "Assam" - it's nice to be very specific, and I always do my best to narrow it down as much as possible so we can enjoy the specific Terroirs of where the woods and oils are coming from.

Be sure to grab some and find out just why it's so highly beloved !

+PS - we have some Guf chips in the shop from Lunglei, as well, that were harvested in November of 2021. The Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary covers a dense virgin forest and is home to many wildlife animals, such as tigers, langurs, elephants, common clouded leopard, gaur, barking deer, sambar, rhesus macaque, wild boar, leaf monkey, hoolock gibbon, and many more. Here you will also find a variety of birds including the national bird of India, the peacock pheasant, as well as imperial pigeons, and hornbills.

It is situated at an elevation ranging from 200 meters to about 1200 meters above sea level with virgin sub - tropical evergreen vegetation.

Located at 296 kilometers away from Aizawl in the southern part of Mizoram, the wildlife sanctuary is also close to Indo – Myanmar and Indo – Bangladesh borders, having rich biodiversity. Usually fewer than 100 bottles will be sold world wide. And to find an 80+ year old bottle - you could have a down payment on a house! A nearly 100 year old bottle might buy a neighborhood of them !!

Extremely old Oils like these are rarely, if ever, available to the public - let alone in small quantities. There's something about the uniqueness of the odor profiles that I don't find in oils from other neighboring regions. ATEEK. It reeks of ancient awesomeness. Timeless old trees in primeval forests. Scents from another Time. Whispers of history long past. Yet it's surprisingly vibrant and lively, I presume because this was the first 3 days of distillation that was collected and reserved. Those first few days usually contain the most lively and zesty sesquiterpenes. Don't worry - the longevity is there, too.

Long before Cambodia became famous for Agarwood - or Laos or Malinau or Sri Lanka, for that matter - even before majestic Manipur and Sultanic Mizoram - Tripura sat on the throne of Gulf palettes. The most beloved and sought-after woods in the Gulf market of the 18th and 19th centuries came from Tripura. Imagine having the chance to smell an oil from a time the air and land was even cleaner, when the forests were still ripe with golden harvests, and from an ancient forest, at that !

The scent on this is just gorgeous, and if you’ve been following my work, you know that these old traditionally-produced oils would have likely been made from the best grades of wood and fermented for some various time. I wouldn't say Kadamtala is Chocolate'y smelling, but it's kinda leaning a little bit in that direction. I'm guessing this may be some of that Bangladeshi proximity that we are smelling.

There's also a little bit of an Assamese tea-like tonality to it that reminds me of some hot cups of black tea I've had over the years ... almost leathery and malty.

It goes without saying that these old traditional Hindis smell quite different in various weather. On a cool and dry day, it may smell more Tea-like. On a hot and humid day (and I loooove wearing Hindis in the heat and humidity) - it takes on an entirely different character that showcases more Leather and Tobacco. I mention merely to remind you : experiment wearing them in different seasons. You'll definitely note some shifts in personality.

I usually don't gender any of my oils or Ouds, but I'd say this particular oil leans more masculine. There is a "classical" Hindi-ness to the odor profiles of this region, and the oils can sometimes develop a nuttiness over time that smells like toasted nuts that I just love. I remind only to say - this was produced for the palate of very deep pockets with a very refined taste, for the collection of a single patron of financial stature that most will never attain. Something many of us likely would never get a chance to smell or experience if it weren't for my very unique relationships with some very out-of-sight people, known only to a certain unusual class of customers.

One thing I find very interesting about woods and oils from the Island of Leyte, specifically - is that in the Gulf, Leyte is adorned above all others for it's Cambodi-like sweetness. I find it interesting because, to my nose, the WOODS don't particularly smell Cambodi-like. The scent of the woods I find to be a very distinctive scent to the Philippines - and in this case, to Leyte, specifically. The OILS, however - the oils I DO find can carry some of the Red and Purple Berries of Cambodi oils that are so beloved. And so it is in the OILS that I find the Cambodi comparison to hold some water.

Neti Neti - bridging the old self and the new - brings forward that warmth of berry compote from Cambodia to the distinct island flavor of Leyte.

There's a rich, brothy Umami to the oil that reminds me of the punch vinegar and fish sauce bring to Filipino dishes (don't worry ... it doesn't smell like vinegar or fish sauce, haha). But it has a brothy punch that reminds me of how these flavors bring a certain zing to a dish, giving it a life and mouthfeel just not found in other cuisines. That same Umami punch is here, in Neti Neti.

The Berries here really shine for me. The Tartness of Raspberries and the Dark Fruitiness of Cassis, combined with that brothy Umaminess - it's not an overly sweet oil - but the combination reminds me of some kind of French Cassis Pastry I used to eat ages ago when I lived in Avignon. Great at any time of year, but especially hits the spot in cooler weather.

Neti Neti has hints of some oceanic notes - but it's less oceanic than many of my Island oils. Leading me to believe that maybe the woods used for this production came more from the mountains of the interior. It's still there - but I fund the jungliness of the ocean breeze to be more humid and dense, than light and sandy. There are some humid soil notes I occasionally catch, as well - lending more to the dense humidity of forest canopy than that of toes in the sand. Whatever the case - it's quite enjoyable, and lends a textural note to the overall vibe of the oil.

Several of my Saudi, Kuwaiti, and Qatari clients have seen samples of this oil already, and every single one of them has LOVED it. I have a bunch of oils that will take me literal years to get through producing from all the work I've been doing out there, as I've stockpiled huge quantities of material from the past several years, that will take me quite some time to work through distilling. It also means we will have some really cool and unique stuff that will be pretty much unheard of from anywhere else, as I'm the only vendor I know going to these lengths of internal productions.

The Trees used in this particular Tripura Series are all 150-450+ years old, and are all trees that I acquired and took down. 15 trees, total. Will take quite awhile to get woods over here (years, likely) - but at some point, you may see some of these insane woods making their way into the shop.

Tripuri 3 is the 3rd oil from the back half of 2024, when my team was in Tripura.

I was actually in India in Jan/Feb of 2025 - and this oil we began while I was actually in country. Should be at least 15-30 very high grade oils I'll produce, that I'll run through my smaller, custom-made copper pot. I already have 2 oils that are curing that will get released at some point (look for SC or SCP in the title when those come out = Small Copper Pot).

Until I can get more of the single tree productions - I started my focus by combining some woods from the trees we took down to produce a line of oils (that for the industry, would be very high grade), but are more affordable. But from me - these oils will be something that I can offer at fantastic prices considering this is all from materials we've controlled from harvest through production. The yields were exceptional (not something the average oils out there are doing), indicating the quality of the woods I reserved for this particular project were even better than I had hoped. It also means I can offer these oils at really great prices due to the unexpected high yields. These oils are punching way above their price tags.

We were in a few different areas of Tripura - this particular oil is a "pan-Tripuri" production, meaning it is made from a mix of all of these trees we took down, from all over the state. There is a "classical" Hindi-ness to the odor profiles of this region that I find distinctly different from more common Assam-origin oils, and in the multitude of directions those profiles can go - I really dig how they all smell.
